Bats in the windmill

Due to the unseasonable cold spell in early spring, the bats have not yet left their winter residence in the windmill. So the windmill will not be opened to the public today (13 April 2013). Sorry for any inconvenience.

Rhododendrons

Viewers should see under the “Rhodies” heading that I have added lots of new pages. Most of the words have been scanned from Morna Knottenbelt’s amazing booklet on the Rhododendrons of Bidston Hill, published in 2004. I took most of the rhododendron photos last year and aim to collect more this year.

Note that most of the photos can be magnified by clicking on them. To return to the original small pictures, use the “Back” arrow on your browser.

On the page about the “Rhododendron Gardens” you will see scans of a couple of postcards of these gardens.

There were obviously a number of these produced in the early 1900’s.

Does anyone have any more of these? Also, does anyone know what happened to Dixons, the photographer on Elmswood Road Birkenhead? It would be fun to see their archives!

Ghost Walk

The Ghost Walk was well attended and a great success last night, some people were asking if we were planning it for next year!

Thanks to story tellers, scarers, stewards and Nic for putting on a fine show. Thanks also to Mandy and Stephen for providing the much appreciated mulled wine and hot chocolate to finish.

A big thank you to all that attended, we hope you enjoyed it and look forward to seeing you again soon – we are very grateful for your support.

First blog post

We are pleased that our long-awaited website is now live and I would like to thank all committee members, Friends and Park Rangers for their input. Over the coming months the site will be developed and announcements of activities and planned events on the Hill will be posted.

If you wish to become a member of the Friends Group please get in touch or, if you simply wish to enjoy this wonderful conservation area and have any ideas in the general interest of the Hill we would love to hear from you.

In the meantime, keep checking for developments, I am sure there will be something on interest for all.
